In Thailand, the use of smart video is on the rise. This has also triggered an increase in demand for advanced storage solutions. In this note, asmag.com speaks with Rujapa Chutijaturont, Senior Sales Manager for Western Digital (Thailand), on the Thai security market and growth prospects for smart video and storage solutions.
Overall, how did the Thai security/fire safety market perform in 2022? What were some of the major growth drivers? How do you think the Thai security/fire safety market will perform in 2023? Will it experience higher growth compared to 2022?
In Thailand, companies are increasingly looking for tools, devices and technology that can contribute to the security of the community, business, and society. Over the past few years, there has been a steady demand in smart video surveillance. Smart video is a keystone of modern security and surveillance activity, with IDC estimating that by 2025 the global market for video surveillance cameras will have grown to nearly $50 billion. This, combined with the convergence of AI developments, cloud computing and the retention of data, means that the demand for reliable and efficient surveillance storage hard drives and flash should continue to grow.
Which vertical markets (retail, hospitality, manufacturing, etc.) in Thailand are especially booming when it comes to security/fire safety, and why?
When it comes to security, the range of applications for smart video is huge in Thailand. Uses range from traffic control in cities to alerts to warn people about natural disasters before they strike. Intelligent video processes can also be applied in retail and in industry. For example, in smart retail, the analysis of shoppers‘ behaviors using motion data from cameras can help identify the best locations for product placement. In manufacturing, smart video can identify inefficient manufacturing processes or enable better quality controls. Even workplace health can be improved using the technology – for example, by monitoring the minimum distance required between people. Offices and commercial buildings, along with schools, public buildings and retail locations have some of the greatest potential for implementing smart cameras. All kinds of businesses benefit from AI-supported security systems. In contrast to conventional surveillance solutions, AI in the camera or NVR help the business to filter out unnecessary data and allows for the comprehensive automatic analysis of objects as a number plate recognition. In addition, with AI, multiple live video streams on screens, or taped data can be observed and evaluated in parallel. The cameras and recorders can also be easily managed remotely.
Do you feel there is any special demand in the Thai market for a specific solution (for example access control, video surveillance, biometrics, fire extinguishing system, fire central management system, etc.)?
Video surveillance is fast-growing in high demand today. There has been great interest from customers in deploying smart video solutions such as video analytics servers, AI, cloud-based video solutions, and deep learning. From home security systems to public transport, smart video plays an increasingly critical role in society, but wouldn’t be able to do so without a foundation of robust storage architecture.
As AI-enabled video develops, it’s crucial to understand how storage architectures must also change. With workloads, dynamic capabilities and deep learning analytics all increasing and evolving, data storage must be continuously innovating to support this. I would expect to see the need and demand for higher capacity enterprise-class hard drives to rise.
What security/fire safety technologies (AI, cloud, etc.) are trendy in Thailand? What user challenges/needs do they solve?
Smart video is the evolution of traditional video surveillance, with the added power of AI and deep learning (DL). The cameras used in smart video can now analyze incoming video streams in real time. The insights extracted in the AI process allow decisions to be made without human intervention. In this way, smart video can act as the eyes and brain of a human, speeding tasks up through automation.
That is why we continue to innovate and have steadily increased the capacities of our surveillance WD Purple Pro hard drives. We work closely with leading systems manufacturers as well as with our customers to make sure that we really understand the trends and requirements they see in their businesses. The newly announced 22TB WD Purple Pro HDD with OptiNAND technology is future-ready and delivers big capacity in an enterprise-class drive for video analytics servers, AI, and deep learning systems to enable data-driven outcomes. Other verticals for our WD Purple HDDs and microSD cards include mobile video, body cameras, automotive cams and drones.
